Yesterday, the amazing Bob Newhart, a US stand-up and sitcom star, who regularly influenced my life, in a career that spanned more than 50 years, passed away. While he is no longer physically present, his incredible contribution will live on for generations to come, thanks to his genius and the Interwebs.

His largest influence in my world was through the show, Newhart. The series consisted of 184 half-hour episodes spanning eight seasons. The series starred Bob Newhart and Mary Frann as an author and his wife, who owned and operated the Stratford Inn in rural Vermont. It was a family favourite, and one we worked hard to never miss.

BOB NEWHART THE THERAPIST – MY FAVOURITE SKIT

As I reflect back on my exposure to Bob Newhart, the skit that stands out, above all others, is when he played Dr Switzer, a therapist.

It came out in 1997 and at first glance, it’s an absurd sketch about a therapist, whose advice seems completely ridiculous at first glance. However, it’s never left my mind, and I can’t tell you how many times I sit with friends, wishing I could take on the persona of Dr Switzer, and assist them with their issue, using his simple and powerful advice… Stop It!

Thank you Bob, for your contribution to my world and how I look at.
